Al Naboodah’s observation gains added significance at a time when Dubai has raised its curtains to Art Dubai 2009, a four-day event that has brought together artists, curators and critics from the art capitals of
the world.

Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, opened the event on Wednesday with a line-up of 68 galleries and almost 2000 artworks by 465 artists.

He was accompanied on a tour of the fair by Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Dr Omar bin Sulaiman, Governor of the Dubai International Financial Centre and Chairman of Art Dubai.

The third instalment of the modern art fair is being held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Abdullah bin Souqat, Director of Dubai International Financial Center Life Style, said: “The Dubai International Financial Center aims to make ‘Art Dubai’ a regional platform for international artists to support the arts and culture not only in Dubai but across the UAE.

“Dubai’s art and culture landscape remains dynamic as ever, providing an impetus to the coordination between Dubai and other cultural centres in the Middle East.

We acknowledge the significance of a forum such as Art Dubai as it helps drive dialogue and discussions while extending our collaboration with other arts and culture organisations in the Middle East.”

Art Dubai 2009 has also welcomed its first exhibitor from Saudi Arabia, demonstrating its status as a key platform for drawing artists from neighbouring countries to exhibit their creative work.

The level of global participation and the increased presence of international media have also exceeded all expectations.

Saeed Al Naboodah, Projects Director at Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, said: “We have once again proved Dubai’s capability to successfully deliver a quality event while confirming its unconditional support for the arts.

“Our activities are based on a long term strategic plan that has not faced any obstacles as they reflect the Dubai Government strategy to support cultural activities in all domains.

“Art Dubai has grown from a small exhibition to an international art platform in just three years.W

“We are proud of the success
and we believe the event will
grow and gain in stature to become
the centrepoint of the international cultural calendar.”
